HOW TO SETUP CALLSS.EXE for SoundScape and SC600 Users
Problem:
You can't run the SSINIT program to configure your sound card when you
are inside of Windows. This is true even if you are using the KAWIN
program on this disk.
Cause:
The SSINIT program could cause conflicts in Windows if you switch
from one mode of music (FM or GM) to the other. As long as you switch
it back to the original music mode before returning to Windows you
will not have a problem, but SSINIT doesn't let you have that choice.
There are newer drivers for the SoundScape/SC600 card that allow it
to be in both modes at the same time and eliminating the need to switch
via SSINIT all the time. You should contact either Ensoniq (SoundScape)
or Reveal (SC600) for these newer drivers. Until you get the new
drivers, the CALLSS.EXE program will do fine.
Solution:
˘ (We will use AMERICA ADVENTURE as the example for the following
instructions.)
˘ Copy over the CALLSS.EXE program from the Utility Disk to your hard
drive, the best place would be to your C:\SNDSCAPE or C:\SC600
directory. This way you only have to keep one copy of it on your
hard disk.
˘ Change to your KA program directory; i.e. CD\AMERICA.
˘ When inside the directory, edit the program batch file; i.e.
EDIT AMERICA.BAT.
˘ Add a line at the top of the file by hitting enter. On this blank
line type in CALLSS FM, this will switch the card to FM mode.
˘ At the end of the file, add a line that says CALLSS GM to switch the
card back to it's General MIDI mode.
˘ Go to the FILE menu and choose SAVE.
˘ Go to the FILE menu and choose EXIT.
˘ You should now be done! As long as the CALLSS and SSINIT programs are
in your path (and they should be), then the batch file will now
switch modes back and forth for the Sound Blaster compatibility.
Remember: There is an easier way! Upgrade your sound driver for your
card and you will not have to switch modes back and forth, the card
will always be capable of doing both FM and GM music at all times!
